The Greedy Old Woman – Tsukioka Yoshitoshi

    A group of grotesque spirits surrounds a kneeling woman in this unusual 1865 woodblock print by Japanese artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. Distorted faces, exaggerated expressions, and vivid colors give the scene a strange balance of horror, dark humor, and theatrical fantasy.  

    The work belongs to Yoshitoshi’s series One Hundred Ghost Stories from China and Japan, which drew on legends, supernatural tales, and popular folklore. The composition reflects his talent for turning unsettling subjects into bold and highly detailed images.  

    Tsukioka Yoshitoshi was one of the leading Japanese printmakers of the late Edo and early Meiji periods. Known for his warriors, ghosts, monsters, and dramatic historical scenes, he brought unusual emotion and psychological intensity to traditional ukiyo-e printmaking.
