The National Parks Preserve Wild Life — J. Hirt, 1936–1939
The National Parks Preserve Wild Life is a WPA-era National Park Service poster centered on two bighorn sheep standing high on a rocky outcrop. Their powerful curved horns and dark brown forms rise against a warm orange sky, while distant blue mountains, a dark tree line and a narrow stretch of water establish the surrounding wilderness with remarkably economical shapes.
Credited to J. Hirt and produced in New York through the Federal Art Project between 1936 and 1939, the design pairs wildlife imagery with a direct conservation message. Orange, brown, slate gray and deep blue give the landscape a restrained natural palette, while the simplified forms and visible silkscreen character keep the composition distinctly graphic. Large lettering across the base declares “The National Parks Preserve Wild Life,” making the animals themselves the visual argument for conservation.
