Thirty-Six Star American Flag, 1864–67

Thirty-Six Star American Flag presents the familiar geometry of the United States flag through the worn surface and muted pigments of a nineteenth-century printed object. Thirty-six cream stars form six orderly rows against a deep blue field, while faded red and pale stripes extend across the linen. Variations in color, small marks, and visible surface wear preserve the material character of the surviving piece.

Created between 1864 and 1867, the flag dates from the period between Nevada becoming the thirty-sixth state and Nebraska joining the Union as the thirty-seventh.
