Unstalked Crinoid in Red — Siboga Expedition

A vivid unstalked crinoid forms the center of this early twentieth-century scientific plate, its numerous feather-like arms curling and overlapping into a loose radial cluster. Vermilion, orange-red, muted yellow, and dark brown lines stand sharply against the warm cream ground, revealing both the complexity and delicacy of the marine animal.

The specimen occupies only part of the broad sheet, leaving generous open space around its energetic form. Long arms sweep outward, double back, and cross one another, while closely spaced pinnules create areas of fine rhythmic texture. The result combines careful zoological observation with an unexpectedly graphic, almost floral character.
