Unstalked Crinoid — Siboga Expedition
An unstalked crinoid spreads across this early twentieth-century scientific plate in an elaborate radial formation. Dozens of slender, feather-like arms emerge from a compact reddish-brown center, forming an intricate arrangement of curved lines and repeating structures in rust red, olive green, turquoise, and dark brown.
The specimen is presented from above against a warm cream ground, allowing its extraordinary symmetry and fine anatomical structure to remain the focus. The curling tips and densely spaced pinnules introduce subtle irregularity into the otherwise ordered composition, giving the scientific study an unexpectedly graphic and almost abstract quality.
